The Apache Trail

This state highway, Route 88, starts in Apache Junction and connects three of four lakes along the Salt River. Outside of town and past the first lake along the 'highway', is Canyon Lake. Most of this route past this point is unpaved, with narrow, winding roads and hair-pin turns with sheer drops of hundreds of feet as it winds it way past Apache Lake and terminates just past the Roosevelt Lake Dam. It was built in the late 1890s to accommodate mule-trains loaded with supplies during construction of Roosevelt Dam on the Salt River.

For more details, please take a look at my blog posting about the trip my daughter and I took on this narrow, winding road through some of the roughest terrain in the state.

The following photos were captured by my daughter (where noted) and myself during our frequent stops to enjoy the scenery.
